Montgomery County, Ala. – A Montgomery County jury has found former Montgomery Police Department Officer Stevie Rodgers guilty of Enticing a Child for Immoral Purposes, District Attorney Daryl Bailey announced.
Rodgers was in uniform and on duty when he made sexually explicit remarks to a 15-year-old girl after ordering her into an empty residence. While alone with the minor, he propositioned her for sexual acts and gave her his cell phone number with instructions to call him later if she wanted to have sex with him.
Rodgers testified at trial and claimed that he was mentoring the victim in his capacity as a police officer and employing a “community policing technique.” He attempted to justify his actions by telling the jury that he was merely trying to “stoop to her level and talk to her in a way she would understand.”
Rodgers will be sentenced by Judge James Anderson on February 20, 2020. He faces a prison sentence of one to 10 years. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.
District Attorney Daryl Bailey expressed his appreciation to Deputy District Attorneys Haley Steelman and Marianalyn Dennis, for their work on this case. He also thanked DA Investigators Terrance James and Andrew Magnus, as well as Detective Angela Young with the Montgomery Police Department, for their tireless efforts in the investigation and prosecution of the case.
District Attorney Bailey said: “Law enforcement officers are some of the most trusted members of our society and must be held to the highest standard. Ninety-nine percent of them are exceptional officers who do a difficult job and do it well. However, when one of them abuses their power or violates the public trust, they will be held accountable. I want to thank the Montgomery Police Department for their investigation as well as their commitment to the prosecution and conviction in this case. I am proud that my office was able to obtain justice for this innocent victim. We will be seeking the maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.”
