WHAT: The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office Elder Justice Task Force, in conjunction with the Alabama Securities Commission and AARP Alabama, is hosting an Elder Abuse Awareness Month Lunch and Learn on Thursday, June 27, 2019. The luncheon, which is made possible through a grant from the Alabama Securities Commission, will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the RSA Activity Center, 201 Dexter Avenue.
WHY: Elder abuse is widespread. Every year an estimated 1 in 10 older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Elder abuse affects older people across all socioeconomic groups, cultures, and races and can occur anywhere when they are disconnected from social supports, including a person’s own home, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other institutional settings such as hospitals.
WHO: District Attorney Daryl Bailey and Edwin Reed, Deputy Director of Administration for the Alabama Securities Commission, will address topics such as elder neglect and abuse, financial exploitation, and telephone and internet scams.
Representatives from AARP Alabama, the Montgomery Area Council on Aging, the Alabama Department of Human Resources and other state/local agencies will have tables setup at the Activity Center with information about elder abuse prevention and support resources for seniors.
