ASU Music & Theatre Majors Claim Awards at NATS Competition

Six of Alabama State University’s music and theatre majors matched their talents against hundreds of students across Alabama to come home as the top-winners at the recent Alabama Chapter of National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) student auditions at the University of Mobile.

A total of 15 ASU vocal and theatre majors competed in the competition with six advancing to its nationals. The ASU team competed in the classical and musical Theatre categories against 261 students representing various Alabama universities and colleges.

The six ASU student-artists who won their categories are:

Classical Edition:

Denaye Bolden, semifinalist, 3rd year Women Classical

Patrick Parker, semifinalist, 4th year Men Classical

Musical Theater:

Lauren Smith, 1st place, 1st year Women Musical Theatre

Zabriel Rivers, 1st Place, 4th year Men Classical AND 1st Place, 4th year Men Musical Theatre

Cheyenne Gibson, semifinalist, 2nd year Women Musical Theatre AND 4th place, 2nd year Women Classical

Troy Webster, 4th place, 3rd year Men Musical Theatre

The chairwoman of ASU’s department of Music said this was a historic win for the University.

“This is the first time ever in the history of NATS that ASU had a student (Zabriel Rivers) win first place in both classical and musical theatre categories,” said Dr. Carly Johnson, chair, ASU Department of Music. “He will now have the opportunity to advance on to the next level in each category.”

Other Hornets participating were Zana Allen, Matthew Chappell, Terrence Clark, Jakia Gadson,  Ja’Coriauna Gilliam, Jasmine Gross, Armond Hughston, KaDarrius Jones and SirCharles Kennedy.

ASU students are under the tutelage of Dr. Cordelia Anderson and Tyrone Hayes and were accompanied by Dr. Joel C. Jones and Dr. Kristofer Sanchack.
