MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Kayla Tillman was 7-for-9 from 3-point territory in tonight’s Southern States Athletic Conference tournament opener against Martin Methodist (21-10), but no shot was bigger than her buzzer-beater at the end of regulation to send Faulkner (19-12) into overtime and the eventual 74-73 win here at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex downtown.
The sixth-seeded Lady Eagles fell to the third-seeded RedHawks in both regular season bouts and trailed by 10 points with just two and a half minutes to play this evening, but a 12-2 Faulkner run that culminated with two Tillman 3s in a span of just 26 seconds gave the team a surge of energy that Martin Methodist never managed to overcome.
Faulkner weighted its scoring with the long ball shooting an impressive 57 percent from behind the arc while Martin Methodist shot just 32 percent. Overall the Lady Eagles shot 43 percent from the field to the RedHawks 36 percent.
Tillman had a team-high 21 points in the outing, all of which came from deep range. The junior also added three rebounds, a block and a steal.
Olivia Adamson followed closely with 20 points, which included a key 3-pointer in overtime, and had seven rebounds and a takeaway.
Chelsea Burt had 17 points, five of which came in extended play, and a court-high seven assists while also tallying five boards.
Faulkner will take on second-seeded Bethel in semifinal action tomorrow night at 5 p.m.
