BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – Faulkner’s (15-8, 7-6 SSAC) Faith LeGate hit a crucial first free throw with just five seconds on the clock to tie tonight’s Southern States Athletic Conference battle with Blue Mountain (6-11, 4-9 SSAC), but after missing her second shot from the stripe, Olivia Adamson secured the offensive rebound and put-back to give the visitors the 61-59 victory.
The Lady Eagles led for just 22 seconds of the first 38 minutes in the ball game and trailed by as many as 15, but by the two-minute warning Faulkner had forced the contest into a dead heat.
Kayla Tillman, who booked 12 points for the Lady Eagles in the outing, secured half her scoring with a pair of late, must-have 3-pointers to offset sharp shooting from the Toppers’ Andrea Lewis and keep the visitors in the fight.
Tillman knocked down a long shot at the 2:18 mark on the back end of a LeGate steal to give the visitors their first lead since the first quarter.
Lewis answered with a basket reclaiming a one-point advantage on the ensuing possession, but Tillman was at it again from behind the arc 13 seconds later giving Faulkner a slight edge.
Lewis countered with a 3-pointer of her own pushing Blue Mountain into another one-point cushion until LeGate’s trip to the free throw line.
LeGate dominated for Faulkner posting 27 points and eight rebounds.
Adamson also had eight rebounds and offered up seven points.
The Lady Eagles will next travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., where they will take on William Carey in more SSAC action. The contest will be hosted by Southern Mississippi in light of the tornado damage on the Crusader campus a few weeks ago. The contest is slated for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Reed Green Coliseum. Faulkner defeated William Carey 76-74 in their previous matchup this season.
