How Can Democrats Win the 2018 and 2020 elections?

Written By Antoine Stokes

On Wednesday November 9, 2016 Americans woke up to Donald J. Trump As president elect of the United States. Like any election, one side celebrates a victory and the other wallows in defeat. To the GOP it was a hard fought win accomplished through grass root campaigning and a return back to conservative values. With the campaign slogan “Make America great Again”    resonating   with the working class American, a seeming underdog candidate in Trump accomplished his ultimate objective. The question on the minds of the defeated Democrats should not be how did Trump win, but how did Democrats lose?  It might appear that both of these questions are the same, but in fact they are very different. In the aftermath of the 2016 election during in depth analysis the question of what strategy does the Democratic Party need to adopt to win the next election remains.  The initial response of many political scientists was for the democrats to go back center. That meaning the democrats should return to more of a libertarian-like Bill Clinton model what some label, the purple politician. I suggest that the democrats consider doing the opposite.

So what plan should be drawn up in the Democratic Party war room? It is a simple solution, stop apologizing for being liberal! Don’t go back to the center and try out neutral Republicans. Instead the democrats should counter attack, go on the offensive and regain the Americans that put faith in “change” when they voted for Obama. Take back Americans youth and try use the mistakes of the divisive politics of the Trump administration to unite the liberal progressive base.  Retroactively move the Democratic Party to the time when young progressive politicians ignited a sense of togetherness in America. Trump and the GOP are reverting back to Reagan’s “it’s morning in America again” by promising to bring back jobs via starting trade wars with the global economy and literately the creation of barriers by way of walls. The Democrats must invoke John F. Kennedy’s “ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” The Democratic Party has no option but to move toward unification while staring down the barrel of a fascist gun.

The first and foremost thing the Democratic Party must do is stop being so polite. They must be blunt and start calling a spade a spade. The GOP and Alt. Right is blunt and straight forward in voicing their beliefs, this is one lesson the Democrats must learn. The Alt. Right has a faction of white supremacy and Wall Street elitist, the Democrats should use this fact and it let the citizens of America see the battle line draw in the sand.   In the 1960’s and 70’s the Flower Power generation and civil rights movement made America choose sides, Millennials must do the same.  The Democratic Party must make people choose if they want to sell their souls to the Trump administration which is backed by Fortune 500 Multi-National Corporations in lieu of civil liberties. Or stand for the America that the previous generations before fought for.  Will America fall on its knees to islamophobia and economic fear or stand on its feet for civil liberties and the ideals of morality and justice? These are the question the Democratic Party must raise to win in the 2018 mid-term elections and the 2020 elections.
