Faulkner University Football Signs Young Talent

by Tripp Reynolds

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner head football coach Charlie Boren and his staff have announced 38 new additions to the Faulkner football roster. The current signing class is comprised of 28 high school signees and ten mid-year transfers.

The prep class is highlighted by three outstanding offensive skill players in Lassiter (Ga.) running back Mason Waters, Andalusia (Ala.) running back Jamal Hourel and Charles Henderson (Ala.) athlete Jabronski Williams.

Bo Morgan, the Eagles’ new recruiting coordinator and receivers coach, was instrumental in finalizing this year’s class.

“We’re really excited about this group, especially the skill guys,” he said. “Waters is a great all-around back, but more specifically, he has the ability to be the home run threat out of the backfield and that’s something Faulkner has been missing the last few years. It was a real coups for us to be able to pull a high school player of his talent out of the Atlanta area. That’s not something we’ve had a lot of success with in the past.”

“Hourel is a bigger back, the kind of guy who can move the chains,” Morgan added. “We had to fight off some bigger schools to get him, but he’s really excited to be an Eagle. Joe Jones has been our top back going on four years and we’re hoping Hourel can learn from him this season, rack up some carries and take over that mantle in the future.”

“Williams is a Swiss Army knife,” Morgan said. “He was a great running back in high school, but he’s so quick and has such good hands that we’ll be able to move him all over the formation. We can’t wait to unleash him on the jet sweep.”

Faulkner signed a host of defensive standouts as well including Andalusia (Ala.) linebacker Antonio Gurley, Baldwin County (Ala.) defensive back Deshaun Love and Adamsville (Tenn.) linebacker Tanner Atkins.

“Gurley is a really physical player who will provide immediate depth inside,” Morgan noted. “He’s a big hitter who will have a chance to play on every special team as a true freshman.”

“Love is a really long defender,” Morgan said. “He’s impressive in coverage and provides run support from the backfield.”

“Atkins is a great athlete with a real head for the game,” Morgan said. “He plays great in space and is dangerous coming off the edge. You can tell he learned a lot in his two years at IMG Academy in Florida before finishing out his career at Adamsville.”

Boren is excited about the current list of signees, but admits that the search for additional weapons isn’t over just yet.

“Overall, we feel great about this group, especially the incoming freshman,” he said about his fourth recruiting class. “We think we’ve added a lot of depth and we were able to hit just about every corner of the state. A big thing that I love about coaching in the NAIA is that we’re not necessarily done at this point. The big schools are limited to how many guys they can sign, but we’re not. We still have some irons in the fire for 2017 and we’re already working on next year’s class as well.”
