Renowned surgeon, Henry Heimlich, creator of the life saving Heimlich maneuver died today at 96, after suffering a heart attack earlier in the week.

Henry Heimlich was director of surgery at a hospital in Cincinnati in 1974. It was here that he discovered a simple but effective technique which could save the lives of people who were choking, then a national health issue.



His maneuver has saved the lives of over 50,000 people, and ensured his legacy for generations to come.
